A song from Whales' upcoming second full-length release, Size and Scale. whalesmusic.bandcamp.com
So, I know what you're thinking. "8:30? tl;dl." Don't be that fool. It's a rare band that can write simmering, shimmering compositions that not only can hold one's attention for that long, but also bend time so that eight and a half minutes flies by in what feels like three. The payoff to "Swift-Tuttle" (a title which is straight up daring me to go all in on the tired spacey shoegazer cliches, but dammit, I WON'T DO IT) is a time-lapse Perseid shower display (dammit, fine, i failed) of erupting melody that's a satisfying and expected climax to the preceding buildup, while triggering disbelieving "holy shit, this rules" laughter all the same. Whales, as always, live up to their name--huge and impossibly graceful while swimming in their own personal galactic ocean. (See? Failed. Don't name your songs after comets when a nerd is writing your blurb.) (DJ Hostettler)
